Ground cover, that is. I get really excited about plants, especially the miniature gems that go about their business without relying on splashy colors and petal size. One of my current favorites is partridgeberry (Mitchella repens). While visiting coastal Maine on the Columbus day weekend I happened to find extensive mats of this miniature creeper. At that time of year all it had to show were the little veiny leaves and some cardinal red berries. I transplanted about 8 inches worth of this little plant, and when I checked this morning I found it alive still. It hasn’t exactly flourished in any dramatic fashion, but it has definitely taken root. And that is all I can hope for. Another wash-a-shore trying to make the best of what the unforgiving Cape Cod soil has to offer…
