Ice on Little Cliff pond, December 31 2010
I went fishing today, or, more precisely, I dangled bait in the water for a few hours. I tried a different pond in Nickerson State Park. I normally fish Cliff pond, and once in a while Little Cliff. The first did not produce any fish when I tried last week, the second was covered by ice. Today was Flax pond’s turn. Like the others, it is a kettle pond left over from the Holocene glacial retreat. It is by no means as deep as Cliff (25-40 feet vs. 80 feet), but it has a similar sandy bottom. You can walk out a good 20 yards (in waders) before the bottom starts to slope down. The pond is stocked with rainbow and brown trout twice a year. There is a resident population of bass and yellow perch. Apparently there is eel, although it’s been a good 15 years since anyone caught one. January 1, 2011 and it was 50 degrees out and sunny. Maybe that was the reason for the lack of bite on the pond. But who cares, it was still a beautiful day spent outdoors.
