Deer have come up a few times recently.
Everyone is complaining about how there are too many deer on Cape Cod. I’ve only seen them sporadically around 6A. Saw a buck once in Nickerson state park a few years back. I never felt like we’re being overrun by them – I tend to think there are way too many people coming down here, but that is another subject.
One night at a Holiday party an acquaintance mentioned she had hit a deer head on, right on Main street in the village, in the middle of the day. The deer, stunned and bloodied, got up and ran into a yard and disappeared. But not before a kid had to avoid the fleeing animal and jumped it with his skateboard. X games in Barnstable Village? I am not sure what happened to the deer after that, but a hunter friend expected the worst – A hurt deer tends to hide in the brush to die, apparently. We will never know, most likely.
Now, just yesterday, on my usual trek to the city I saw a deer scamper across 6A in Sandwich, barely 20 feet in front of my car. The car coming from the opposite side missed the doe, just barely. The animal had to pull in it’s backend to avoid getting hit. A collision would have had consequences for all parties – the animal certainly would have been killed, or severely injured. The impact would have caused damage to the other car, for sure, and my car would most likely not have escaped either the thrown animal or the other vehicle, post-deer impact.
There may or may not be more deer taking up residence on Cape Cod, but it only takes one to leave a lasting memory. Stay alert, my friends.
