It is still cold out there, with weather systems still bringing occasional snow, sleet and rain. However, Punxsatawney Phil did predict an early Spring this year, and maybe others in the animal kingdom agree. For the last week or so I’ve observed a flock of Regulus calendula (ruby-crowned kinglet), mostly females and an occasional male, feeding in my yard. There is nothing unusual about this behavior, as large flocks are often observed during migration. What’s unusual is the timing, I believe – normally they don’t show up in Massachusetts until early April or so. I know it’s unwise to take data like this as confirmation of any prediction, especially one coming from a rodent. After all, these birds tend to breed North of here, and maybe they’re just wintering on the Cape. But at this point, I’ll take anything as long as it makes me think winter is over and done with. Seeing is believing.
