I love cats, but I have about had it with my neighbor’s kitty. He has been spending an inordinate amount of time in my yard – perhaps because of all the wild vegetation and lovely birds. All the things I love about my yard, he seems to love too. Places to hide, things to eat. I saw him kill what may have been a chipmunk the other day, I heard the mournful whimper and then saw kitty with the carcass in his mouth. If I ever see him with a bird I will not be happy. I keep my own pets indoors, out of concern for them and for native wildlife. I wish other people would too. The American Bird Conservancy has this to say about the effects of keeping cats outdoors: “Scientists estimate that nationwide, cats kill hundreds of millions of birds, and more than a billion small mammals, such as rabbits, squirrels, and chipmunks, each year. Cats kill common species such as Cardinal, Blue Jay, and House Wren, as well as rare and endangered species such as Piping Plover, Florida Scrub-Jay, and California Least Tern…Scientists now list invasive species, including cats, as the second most serious threat to bird populations worldwide.”
